Housing and planning

The Green Party want to see the appropriate use of brownfield sites; we strongly oppose the coalition government’s new National Planning Policy Framework which we believe exposes this Government's shocking bias towards big business and demonstrates its determination to tear up protection laws for our precious countryside and green spaces. The Framework seeks to scrap the policy of building on brownfield sites before greenfield sites and abandoning the duty to ensure that new developments minimise road traffic. The Green Party believes the planning system should protect people and the environment, not provide a charter for unsustainable economic growth.

We will insist on the highest environmental building standards for new developments - energy efficiency, renewable energy options and water saving measures as standard and support low car housing with car share clubs, high quality public transport and cycle routes. Green councillors will also fight to strengthen protection for pubs, post offices, and other community assets.
